About Skelmersdale
Skelmersdale has a very different history and layout from many of the older towns across West Lancashire. Originally a much smaller mining community, it was designated as a New Town in 1961 and expanded to provide housing for people from Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area.
Today, the town includes established residential areas such as Digmoor, Birch Green and Yewdale alongside commercial and employment areas. Tawd Valley Park also runs through the heart of Skelmersdale, following the River Tawd from Yewdale across a large part of the town.
Skelmersdale’s mix of post-war housing, newer homes, commercial properties and industrial buildings creates a varied range of roofing requirements. Work can include repairs to tiled pitched roofs, leaking flat roofs on garages and extensions, gutter and roofline repairs, and larger commercial roofing projects.
Old Skelmersdale and the New Town Estates
Most Skelmersdale homes were built by the new town Development Corporation between the 1960s and the mid-1980s, around an older core of terraces and cottages from the mining era, with new homes still being added. Each type brings different roofing work.
The older streets of Old Skelmersdale, around Sandy Lane and Ormskirk Road, still have terraced houses and stone cottages from the coal-mining years. A row of five stone cottages on Ormskirk Road is on the local heritage list as a reminder of the town before the new town was built, and most of them now have replacement concrete tiles. On older properties like these, the chimneys, flashings and gutters can be older than the roof covering itself.
The new town was planned around the car, with housing and industry in separate zones and plenty of green space. Some early Development Corporation houses were built with prefabricated concrete, and many estates follow Radburn-style layouts, where homes face footpaths and green space and cars are kept to parking courts.
What This Means for Roof Work
- Access. Where a house fronts a footpath rather than a road, scaffolding, materials and waste may have to come in from a parking court or across shared ground. We assess access at the survey and build it into the quotation.
- Construction type. Roofs on prefabricated concrete houses can be built and supported differently from those on brick homes, so we inspect before recommending a repair or a roof replacement.
- Joined roofs. Where homes are terraced, one roof runs across several houses, and any new section must be tied in carefully with the roofs next door at each party wall.
- Higher ground. Homes on the rising ground towards Ashurst Beacon and Up Holland catch more wind than those lower down, so ridges, verges and fascias, soffits and gutters take more strain.
Roofing for Skelmersdale's Businesses
Skelmersdale is one of West Lancashire’s main employment centres, with industrial estates at Pimbo, Gillibrands and Stanley and newer units at White Moss, close to the M58. Gillibrands was among the first to be developed, in the late 1960s. We carry out commercial roofing on units, offices and shops, from patching a leaking flat roof to laying a new covering, and plan the work around the business wherever we can.
