About Maghull
Located to the north-east of Liverpool, Maghull is a well-established Merseyside town with a varied mix of homes, local businesses and newer residential development.
The town includes a broad range of property styles and ages, with established residential areas sitting alongside more recent housing. From tiled and slate-pitched roofs to garages, extensions and flat roofing, local properties can require very different types of roofing work.
Maghull is also known for its parks and open spaces, while Liverpool Road North provides one of the familiar routes through the local area.
Roofer & Builder is based at Maghull Business Centre on Liverpool Road North, putting our team directly within the area we serve. From emergency roof repairs to planned roofing and building work, Maghull is at the heart of our local service coverage.
How Maghull's Homes Were Built
In short, most homes in Maghull are twentieth-century semis, detached houses and bungalows under tiled roofs, with a smaller number of Victorian villas under slate.
Maghull grew in stages. The canal reached the town in 1774 and the railway in 1849, and a pocket of Victorian villas and semis grew up west of the station. Station Road, where Meccano inventor Frank Hornby once lived, still has red brick houses with decorative brickwork at the eaves and slate roofs. The opening of Northway, the A59, in 1933 set off much faster growth, and the town’s roofs still show each stage:
- 1930s semis along Liverpool Road South, with hipped tiled roofs over curved bay windows.
- Inter-war and 1950s estates such as Moorhey and Dover’s Brook, mostly brick and render under tiles. A few houses along Northway were built with flat roofs.
- 1950s to 1970s estates including Clent Farm, Parkbourn and The Lakes, largely semis with simple tiled roofs.
- 1970s chalet-style houses and dormer bungalows around Round Meade, with steep roofs and rooms built into them.
- Newer homes at Old Hall Park, at Poppyfields beside Maghull North station, and on land to the east of the town.
What Tends to Go Wrong on Maghull Roofs
Hips and ridges bedded in mortar
A hipped roof has far more ridge and hip tiles than a plain gable, and on many 1930s houses they are still held only by mortar. When it cracks, tiles work loose and rain gets underneath. Under BS 5534, mortar alone is no longer enough to hold these tiles, so our ridge tile repairs use a dry system or a mortar bed with mechanical fixings.
Bays, porches and the Northway flat roofs
The small roofs over bays and porches, and the original flat roofs on some Northway houses, are easy to forget until damp appears indoors. Their coverings and wall flashings are worth checking now and then. Our flat roof service covers these as well as the many garages and rear extensions added since.
Rooms in the roof
Chalet houses and dormer bungalows rely on a lot of junctions: dormer cheeks, short steep slopes, valleys and flat dormer tops. A failed flashing at any of them usually shows as a stain on a sloping bedroom ceiling rather than in a loft.
The Damfield Lane Conservation Area
Maghull’s one conservation area surrounds the junction of Damfield Lane and Deyes Lane, bounded by the canal, and includes St Andrew’s Church, the medieval chapel in its churchyard and Chapel House Farm among its listed buildings. If your home is listed or inside it, speak to Sefton Council before changing roof materials or adding roof windows or dormers.
