About Widnes
Widnes sits on the northern bank of the River Mersey and has a strong industrial heritage, particularly through its historic connection with chemical manufacturing. The local chemical industry transformed the town during the 19th century, and Widnes and neighbouring Runcorn became major centres for chemical production.
That history remains closely associated with the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum, which explores the development of the chemical industry and its connection with the local area.
The Silver Jubilee Bridge is another familiar Widnes landmark, linking the town with Runcorn across the Mersey. Halton Council records that the bridge opened in 1961.
Today, Widnes includes established residential areas such as Farnworth, Upton Rocks, Halton View and Ditton, alongside commercial and industrial properties. The varied mix of buildings creates a wide range of roofing requirements, from tiled and slate roof repairs to flat roofing, gutters and larger commercial projects.
How Widnes Grew Around Its Industry
In short: Widnes grew quickly around its chemical works from the mid-nineteenth century, so its oldest housing is Victorian and Edwardian terraced property near the river and the town centre, with inter-war, post-war and modern estates beyond. Roofs range from old natural slate to modern concrete tiles.
Until 1847 the land at West Bank, then called Woodend, was largely marsh. That year John Hutchinson opened a chemical works at Spike Island, and the town grew up around the works that followed, gradually absorbing the older villages of Farnworth, Appleton, Ditton and Upton. Slum clearance and rebuilding between the wars and after 1945 replaced much of the earliest housing. The council’s homes were later transferred to Halton Housing, and recent estates such as Upton Rocks added modern houses and apartments.
West Bank and the Riverside
West Bank sits at Runcorn Gap, where the Mersey narrows between Widnes and Runcorn, and its older terraced streets lie close to open water. The West Bank Promenade conservation area, designated in 1976, includes the Grade II* listed Church of St Mary and the Grade II* former power house of the transporter bridge. Homes this close to the river are more exposed to wind and driving rain off the estuary, so ridges, verges, chimney flashings and gutters deserve a check after every major storm. If high winds have caused damage, our storm damage repairs page explains how to record it for your insurer and what happens next.
Modern Homes: Ventilation, Extensions and Conservatories
On homes built in recent decades, problems tend to be smaller and more specific. One that often goes unnoticed is condensation in the loft. If insulation has been pushed into the eaves and blocks the ventilation gap, or an extractor fan discharges into the roof space, moisture can form on the underside of the roof and drip onto the ceiling, looking just like a leak. Our guide to stopping damp and mould from poor roof ventilation covers the signs.
Owners of these homes also often want to replace a glazed conservatory roof with a solid, insulated one. Building Control approval is normally required, and a solid roof is much heavier, so the existing frames and base have to be assessed before anything is ordered. See our conservatory roof conversions.
