Crosby's Neighbourhoods and Their Roofs

Crosby grew as a chain of settlements along the Liverpool to Southport railway, so roofs vary a great deal from one district to the next:

  • Blundellsands was planned in the nineteenth century as a suburb of large detached villas around the Key Park, many in Victorian Gothic style with steeply pitched slate roofs, ornate gables and tall chimneys.
  • Moor Park, developed from the late 1890s, has individually designed houses with a strong Arts and Crafts influence, including tile hanging and decorative timbering.
  • Little Crosby is an old estate village of brick and sandstone cottages and farm buildings.
  • Great Crosby’s suburbs are mostly pre-war semis with curved bays and tiled roofs, plus post-war estates that include 1970s dormer bungalows.

Conservation Area Rules That Affect Your Roof

Crosby has four conservation areas: Blundellsands Park, Moor Park, Little Crosby and Crosby Hall. New dormers need planning permission in each, and Moor Park has had an Article 4 direction since 2010, so most alterations facing a road or open space need consent there. Sefton Council’s guidance also includes details that are easy to miss:

  • porch and portico roofs should not be covered in mineral felt
  • original gutters and downpipes should be replaced in cast iron of the same pattern, or cast aluminium if cast iron cannot be found
  • in Moor Park, tile hanging and decorative timbering should be kept and repaired in their original form

We flag points like these when we quote.

I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote… John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case… he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn’t). It’s so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!

John and his team completed some repairs to our roof today. I completely recommend them. Friendly, tidy, professional and the job was completed to a very high standard. John is super knowledgable and put our mind at ease about the overall condition of our roof too. We’ll be using them when we need work like this in the future.

FAQs

Roofing Questions from Crosby

Not without checking first. In Blundellsands Park, Sefton Council expects a like-for-like covering, so natural slate is normally the answer, and sound slates from the old roof can often be reused. Our slate roofing page explains more.

Very, close to the shore. Storms in the 1920s and 1930s claimed houses on the seaward side of Burbo Bank Road North, and the present sea wall dates from the 1960s. Wind is the main threat now, so after a gale check from the ground for slipped slates, lifted lead or leaning pots. See our storm damage repairs.

In most cases. Hung tiles on walls and gables can be refixed, and broken or missing ones replaced with reclaimed or new tiles of a similar size, colour and profile. We will tell you if anything needs Sefton’s approval first.

Yes. As well as Great Crosby and Blundellsands, we cover Little Crosby, Thornton, Hightown, Brighton-le-Sands and neighbouring Waterloo. Our base in Maghull lies a few miles to the east.
