Huyton's Housing Through the Years
The old village and Victorian suburb
Huyton appears in the Domesday Book, and its Grade II* listed parish church of St Michael dates largely from around the fourteenth century. After the railway arrived, large villas went up along Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road, now a conservation area. Built of red brick or local red sandstone, many have overhanging roofs on ornate brackets, covered in Welsh slate.
Roby
The Roby Conservation Area is made up mostly of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings, from small vernacular cottages to large houses.
The overspill estates
In 1932 Liverpool bought a large area of the Earl of Derby’s Knowsley estate and went on to build four large estates in the north-west of Huyton-with-Roby: Fincham, Huyton Farm, Longview and Woolfall Heath. By 1950 most of Huyton’s residents had moved out from the city. These homes are typically brick semis and short terraces with tiled pitched roofs.
New homes
More recently, the North Huyton regeneration and developments off Knowsley Lane have added modern housing, usually with concrete tiled roofs and uPVC rooflines.
Common Roofing Problems in Huyton
On the older estate houses, some roofs date back close to a century and others have been re-covered since. Typical issues include:
- tired underlay and battens beneath the tiles, letting wind-driven rain reach the loft
- cracked or loose mortar ridges and verges, which should now be replaced with mechanically fixed systems
- chimney stacks with failed pointing or flaunching, including stacks that are no longer used but still need to be kept sound
- rotten timber fascias and leaking gutters, which our fascias, soffits and gutters service replaces
- failing felt roofs on porches, garages and extensions
On the Victorian villas, the usual problems are slipped slates, worn lead in valleys and around stacks, and deep timber eaves that need sound boards and brackets to stay weathertight.
Work in Huyton's Conservation Areas
Knowsley Council has designated conservation areas at Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road, around St Michael’s Church, and at Roby. The council’s appraisal for Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road highlights alterations such as re-roofing in modern materials and removing chimneys as the kind of change it can control. If your home is in one of these areas, speak to Knowsley’s planning team before changing roof materials or chimneys. We aim to repair like for like, reusing sound slate and matching new material to the old.
Building Work as Well as Roofing
If you are planning a rear extension, a loft conversion or a solid roof for an old conservatory, it helps to have one team that understands both the building and the roof. Roofer & Builder combines roofing and building skills, so on home extensions we take on the structure, steelwork and roof together and make sure the new roof ties properly into the existing one. Where brickwork or sandstone needs attention, our pointing service can help.
