Roofers in Southport

Roofer & Builder repairs and replaces roofs across Southport, including Birkdale, Ainsdale and Churchtown. We are a family-run roofing and building firm based in Maghull, working on Victorian villas, terraces, bungalows, flats and commercial premises throughout the town.

Southport grew as a Victorian seaside resort on low, flat land beside the Irish Sea, and its roofs reflect both sides of that story: generous slate roofs with ornate details, and constant exposure to wind and salt air. With more than 20 years’ roofing experience, we look at the whole roof before recommending anything and tell you plainly whether a repair or a bigger job makes more sense. For older properties, our slate roof services are a good place to start.

Southport's Housing, From Birkdale Villas to Modern Estates

Much of the town’s character comes from its Victorian expansion. Lord Street was laid out as a broad, tree-lined boulevard, and Birkdale Park was laid out from around 1850 as a suburb of large villas, many built in an Italianate style and several now listed. Around Hesketh Road, Edwardian villas in Arts and Crafts and Old English styles have steep roofs that often sweep down to first-floor level. Older still are the whitewashed cottages of Churchtown, several of them still thatched.

Roofs on the older properties are mostly natural slate, often with decorative ridge tiles, tall chimney stacks, lead-lined valleys, bay roofs and timber barge boards. Some larger houses are now divided into flats or used as guest houses. Away from the conservation areas, Southport also has plenty of twentieth-century semis, bungalows and newer estates, with tiled roofs, dormers, garages and flat-roofed extensions.

How the Coast Affects Southport Roofs

Most of Southport sits only slightly above sea level on the flat West Lancashire coastal plain, with little to break the wind coming in off the sea. That has practical consequences:

  • Wind uplift loosens ridge tiles, lifts slates at eaves and verges, and peels back poorly fixed flat roof edges. BS 5534 now requires ridge and hip tiles to be mechanically fixed rather than held by mortar alone, so a ridge that is rebedded or replaced should meet that standard. Our ridge tile repairs page explains the options.
  • Salt-laden air speeds up corrosion of nails, clips and metal fittings, one reason slates on older roofs start to slip.
  • Driving rain tests chimney flashings, bay roofs and dormer cheeks, where small gaps let water track a long way before it shows indoors.

Roof Repairs in Southport's Conservation Areas

Southport and Birkdale contain several conservation areas, including Lord Street, the Promenade, Churchtown Village, Hesketh Road, Birkdale Park, Birkdale Village and West Birkdale. Sefton Council’s advisory guidance for areas such as Birkdale Park asks owners to keep original roof lines, to repair or renew roofs in reclaimed or new materials that match the original covering, and to retain features such as decorated ridge tiles and eaves and gable details. Unsafe chimney stacks should be rebuilt to their original height and design, and new dormer windows need planning permission.

We work within these requirements, sourcing matching slate and ridges where possible, and will flag anything worth confirming with Sefton’s planning team.

Other Roofing and Building Work in Southport

Not every job in Southport involves slate. We also handle:

  • flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers, in felt, EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass
  • leadwork around chimneys, bays and valleys
  • fascias, soffits and gutters, which take a battering on exposed roads near the seafront
  • roofs on shops and other commercial premises
  • loft conversions and VELUX roof windows, fitted by an accredited VELUX installer, with any building work done by the same team

I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote… John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case… he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn’t). It’s so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!

John and his team completed some repairs to our roof today. I completely recommend them. Friendly, tidy, professional and the job was completed to a very high standard. John is super knowledgable and put our mind at ease about the overall condition of our roof too. We’ll be using them when we need work like this in the future.

FAQs

Roofing Questions from Southport

Often, yes. Natural slate itself can last a very long time; what usually fails first is the nails, battens or underlay beneath it. If the slates are sound and the problem is local, refixing and targeted repairs can be good value. If fixings have failed across the roof, stripping and re-laying it, reusing sound slates where possible, may be the better long-term option.

Repairs that simply replace like with like are not usually a planning matter. Switching to a different roof covering, adding dormers or altering chimneys may need consent, and listed buildings normally need listed building consent for works affecting their character. Sefton Council’s planning team can confirm what applies to your property.

Yes. We carry out domestic and commercial work, including roofs on converted houses, flats and rental properties. Where a roof is shared, a single point of contact, such as a managing agent, makes it easier to agree the quotation and access.

Yes. We cover the whole of Southport, including Birkdale, Ainsdale, Hillside, Churchtown and the town centre, as well as nearby Formby and the villages between Southport and Ormskirk.
