About Speke
Speke sits in south Liverpool and combines established residential areas with major commercial and employment sites.
One of the area’s best-known landmarks is Speke Hall, a historic timber-framed house whose construction began in the 1530s and continued in phases through to the end of the 17th century.
Speke is also closely associated with Liverpool John Lennon Airport and the surrounding commercial areas. This mix of homes, business premises and larger buildings creates a broad range of roofing requirements across the area.
Local roofing work can include repairs to tiled and pitched roofs, leaking flat roofs on garages and extensions, chimney and leadwork repairs, gutters and roofline work, as well as commercial roofing projects.
Speke's Housing: A Planned Satellite Town
In short: most homes in Speke belong to the estate Liverpool Corporation planned in the 1930s, now joined by newer housing association and private homes. Most of the original estate houses are now between about seventy and ninety years old, so the right repair depends on what has already been done to each roof.
Liverpool Corporation bought the Speke estate in 1928, intending to create a self-contained satellite town shaped by garden city ideas. Building began in 1937 under the city’s housing architect Lancelot Keay, laid out around Western Avenue and Eastern Avenue, and the estate was largely complete by the late 1950s. It was mainly family houses, a high proportion of them larger parlour houses, with a smaller number of flats, some of which were later demolished and replaced with houses. In 1999 the council’s homes in Speke and Garston passed to South Liverpool Homes, which still owns many of them and is building new homes in the area; others are privately owned or let. Our roof repairs service covers all of them.
Wind Exposure Near the Mersey and the Airport
Speke sits close to the widest part of the Mersey estuary, and the land around the airport and the riverside is flat and open. Roofs here have little shelter from the prevailing south-westerly winds, so loose verges, lifted tiles at the eaves and ridges that have lost their mortar tend to be the first things to fail in a storm. A loose ridge tile can fall onto a path or car, so it should not be left. Our storm damage roof repairs page explains what to do after high winds, including photographing damage for your insurer.
Some of the newer homes in Speke have been built with solar panels. If a leak or broken tile sits beneath an array, the panels may have to be lifted to reach it, which should be coordinated with a solar installer so the system is isolated and refitted safely.
Business Units and Commercial Roofs
Business parks such as Estuary Commerce Park, reached from Speke Boulevard, and Liverpool International Business Park near the airport bring together warehouses, offices and light industrial units. On buildings like these, blocked outlets and overflowing gutters are a common route for water into the premises, and they are easy to miss without regular checks. Before roof work on any unit built before 2000, the owner’s asbestos records should be checked. Our commercial roofing services cover flat and pitched roofs and rainwater systems.
The airport’s original 1930s terminal, now a hotel, and its two flanking hangars are Grade II* listed, so some commercial buildings here carry heritage controls too.
